Is an AI citation the same as an AI referral?

AI Search Proof and Citations · 2026-07-08

No. A citation is visible source attribution inside an AI answer. An AI referral is a visit that arrives from an identifiable AI service after somebody follows a link or pathway. A citation can create a referral, but many people read an answer without clicking. A referral can also be observed even when the business did not capture the exact answer that preceded it. That is why OTC reports visible citation and AI referral separately rather than treating both as the same success event.

Related follow-upWhy does Own The Conversation avoid turning every AI bot request into a success story?
