An AI citation is a visible source attribution inside an AI-generated answer: the user can see that a page, domain or source has been referenced. Retrieval is earlier and less visible. It means an identified system successfully requested or accessed a resource while researching or constructing an answer. Retrieval can happen without the source appearing in the final response, so Own The Conversation does not count a bot request as a citation. That distinction matters because a technical retrieval is evidence of machine access; a visible citation is evidence that the source was surfaced to the user.
